Here's a Microsoft patent for a bizarre gaming helmet

Mar 20 2012 05:24 PM | Smokey-Smokerson in Microsoft

The gaming world certainly isn't without its crazy patents and, today, we see Microsoft add another to the pile. The patent in question is a "laser-scanning virtual image display" able to display an image very close to a user's eyes. Specifically, two such displays would be incorporated into a helmet, allowing a user to see a stereoscopic, three dimensional image. While not exclusively meant for video games, the patent does mention that the helmet could "be used in applications ranging from video gaming to aviation."

Furthermore, as spotted by Patent Bolt, the displays "may be at least partly transparent," which would allow the user to see the world around him as well as the projected image. That's good, because we prefer our pilots to keep their eyes on the sky, thank you very much.

PEGI: Dragon's Lair coming to XBLA

Sure, you can buy Dragon's Lair for many, many (many) platforms, but Xbox 360 is not one of them. Unless you count buying a DVD version and playing it through the Xbox's DVD player. That embarrassing omission is now being corrected: a PEGI rating has been spotted for an XBLA version of the FMV game. We're shocked ... that it took this long for Dragon's Lair to end up on Xbox.

Being a rating and not an official announcement, there's no actual release date associated with this newly discovered XBLA release. We're checking in with Digital Leisure, who will probably tell us about a couple more upcoming ports of Dragon's Lair in the process of answering.

New Gears of War 3 title update emerges tomorrow

The fourth major title update for Gears of War 3 is set to drop tomorrow, offering players yet another round of tweaks and bug fixes. For one, Savage Grenadiers and Savage Drones can now perform SWAT turns in Beast Mode.

King of the Hill is also tended to -- ring locations are now visibile in spectator mode, and on some levels the ring locations have been moved. Other multiplayer tweaks include balancing the pistol fire rate between hosts and non-host players. And one particular glitch involving the elevator area on the map Hotel has been fixed.

The minor maintenance, which goes live at 2AM PT tomorrow, precedes the launch of the Forces of Nature DLC pack next week. For the full update notes, check the source link below.

No 'new Xbox' talk at E3, Microsoft says

Having held the top NPD spot for the past 14 months straight -- and with the introduction of Kinect -- the old Xbox 360 still has some life in it yet. "For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360," Xbox spokesperson and Group Manager of PR David Dennis told Bloomberg. "There will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon."

A few sources close to news outlet Bloomberg insist that Microsoft will introduce a new console in 2013 at the earliest. Next year's E3 could hold an unveiling of the Xbox 360 successor, says the report, with a potential same-year launch to follow. Now doesn't that sound familiar?

Xbox Live users report Gamerscores dropping to zero, MS aware of the issue [Update: potential fixes]

Some Xbox Live users are finding a nasty surprise today: their Gamerscores and Achievement lists showing up as totally empty -- an ironic twist after news of a Gamerscore increase for XBLA games. Tips are pouring in from concerned 360 owners.

Microsoft is already working on it, noting on its support page "We are aware of the problem and appreciate your patience while we implement a solution." Joystiq is trying to determine the cause of today's issue, and will keep you updated as the story develops.

Update: Microsoft says you should sign out and sign back in, and suggests you try re-downloading your profile if the issue persists.

Gears of War 3 DLC revealed

Feb 17 2012 08:15 PM | Smokey-Smokerson in Microsoft

Epic Games have revealed that Gears of War 3 will receive the 'Forces of Nature' DLC on March 27th.

Five maps will be available in the pack of which three will host a natural disaster, as described by the title. The remaining two maps are made up of Raven Down, from the original and Jacinto from Gears of War 2.

A full description of each map is listed below.

•Aftermath: A government park after a tsunami. There is seaweed and wreckage everywhere, and the main play space sits under a huge cargo ship which was deposited on top of a building during the storm. The area floods and quakes during gameplay, as the whole thing is teetering on the edge of falling into the water below. This has gameplay implications as it is difficult to aim during the quakes, and difficult to be stealthy while splashing through the water.

•Artillery : Starts out looking like an ordinary military base, but during gameplay a storm kicks up. Lightning begins to flash on the horizon and eventually a tornado develops and sweeps near the play space. Dust and debris are kicked up making it difficult to see, and the buffeting winds can mask your approach.

•Cove: A is a small port that the Stranded have taken over and turned into a little village. The map is very open with long lines of sight, but there is a really, really heavy layer of fog that masks just about everything. There's a really nice sniper nest inside a central ship, but the sniper's form is silhouetted by the low angle light shining through the fog.

•Jacinto: It was a beautiful city, but huge stalks have popped up through the buildings and flooded the entire area with Imulsion. Half of the map is dead and crumbling, with Imulsion fumes hanging in the air. To make matters worse, the drizzle that is present when a match begins quickly develops into a heavy rain storm that impedes visibility and lines of sight as water starts sheeting off the buildings.

•Raven Down: A very small crossroads that is blanketed in a blinding snow storm. A Raven helicopter has crashed in the storm, and crashed through an elevated train on its way down, so there's train wreckage to deal with as well. The snowstorm ebbs occasionally, but is more often so heavy that it's difficult to see more than a few meters ahead at any given time.
Fergusson also revealed that the DLC will include four weapons hidden in the maps called "Elemental Cleavers". He provided an example by describing the "snow cleaver", which sends an icy gust at the enemy that stuns them. The "emulsion cleaver" explodes on impact and does a small amount burn damage to nearby enemies. Achievements have been tied to these new weapons.

Although no price has yet been announced, those of you with a season pass will receive the DLC pack for free.
