Darksiders II Release Date Pushed Back
Apr 18 2012 02:24 PM | Smokey-Smokerson in Gaming News
THQ have delayed the released of their upcoming title Darksiders II. So rather than the game coming out on June 26, 2012 in North America and the June 29 in Europe, the release date will now be in August, 2012.
Quote
This is great news for the team at Vigil, because it allows additional time for polish and to ensure that all aspects of Darksiders II meet the high-quality bar the team is targeting. In game development, more time is always a good thing for quality and the Vigil team is dedicated to providing the definitive Darksiders experience.
They also released a brief Q&A regarding the delay;
Q.) When will the game be available in United Kingdom?
A.) Darksiders II is scheduled to be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in August of 2012. The release date will vary by region (as they did with a June release). The exact street dates will be issued for each region in the days to come.
Q.) Has the date been pushed back to tie in with Nintendo’s WiiU™ launch?
A.) The date was shifted to ensure we meet the high quality threshold that we are committed to achieving. It has nothing to do with any other platform releases.
Q.) Is Darksiders II being pushed back because of the recent layoffs at Vigil Games?
A.) No, the staffing changes at Vigil Games have not impacted the release date.
Q.) Is content going to be cut from the game?
A.) Definitely not! As we approached the game’s completion date, the team asked for more time to polish the huge amount of content included in this ambitious project. We are all committed to making Darksiders II the highest-quality game possible and the additional time will allow the team to do just that. The game content remains unchanged, as do our future DLC plans.
Q.) Are you truly pushing the date back to make Darksiders II a better game?
A.) Absolutely, that is the only goal fueling this decision. Nothing is more important to us than quality and thankfully our company’s current operational position allows us to make the right choice for Darksiders II.
Q.) Aside from getting it later, will this affect my pre-order?
A.) Definitely not, everyone who has/does pre-order Darksiders II will receive the Limited Edition at release, along with any associated retail exclusive content.
Q.) Will the game definitely release in August or will it be delayed again?
A.) This small delay is to allow additional time for polish and bug fixing. As we’ve stated in numerous articles and videos, Darksiders II is substantially larger game than its predecessor and the ambition of this project requires extra time to polish to the high standards that Vigil Games and THQ are committed to.

PSA: 13-hour PSN maintenance begins tomorrow morning
Apr 16 2012 12:05 PM | Smokey-Smokerson in Gaming News
It's time once again for the PlayStation Network to be poked, prodded and generally fiddled around with by Sony's countless technicians and maintenance cyborgs. As per usual, 13 hours chock full of network rejiggering are scheduled to begin tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. EST, during which time the PSN Store, PlayStation Home, Account Management services and online play will be unavailable.
PlayStation websites hosted on PSN servers, like the Official PlayStation Blog, will also be offline during maintenance. The official PlayStation Twitter account, however, will continue to function properly, since it's on Twitter and everything. Updates regarding maintenance can be found there, though extended periods of downtime are usually situations where no news is good news.

Resident Evil 6 and Chronicles HD
Apr 12 2012 10:30 PM | Smokey-Smokerson in Gaming News
With the Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City game released a few weeks ago, the developers have now focused on the new Resident Evil core game that will attempt to bring back the horror.
From what the developers have said, they seem to have learned from their "mistakes" trying to turn the series into a Survival Shooter game with the adventure filled-with-guns-and-shooting Resident Evil 5 and they decided to frighten us by creating something new...
What will help in making this title what it seems to be the best of the series is the reappearance of some familiar characters like Chris Redfield, Sherry Birkin and Leon Kennedy. Along them we will find the "mysterious likes of Secret Service agent Helena Harper, talented Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance sniper Piers Nivans and Jake Muller", who appears to be the son of the meanest guy in the Resident Evil series... Albert Wesker.
But the main factor which made the series famous are of course... zombies. That's right the undead are back and more "alive" than ever. They can now use any weapons they had much like the enemies at Resident Evil 4 & 5 and even jump and run at you.
Something else that has FINALLY been implemented is the ability to shoot and run simultaneously. Honestly who hasn't stopped and wondered in the past "Why does everyone stop to shoot?" Well this time the control system appears to be smoother than ever.
Finally, the recipe of the cooperative game seems to have worked and in almost every section of the game, two characters could be seen. Offline and online co-op is back and this time without having to go to the main menu to join. Anyone can leave or join in the middle of the game. What to add more is that the Mercenaries mode will return as well.
October of 2012 seems too far away right? Patience and you will soon have this beaty in your PS3s.
With the big noise around Resident Evil 6, Capcom rushed to publish some new screenshots from the upcoming HD remake of Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles. The aforementioned titles, which were until now Wii exclusives, will be available as a collection for PS Network the next June. Apart from the new improved graphics, PS Move support is said to be added.

Demon's Souls' servers shutting down
Apr 12 2012 07:27 PM | Smokey-Smokerson in Gaming News
No not the more recent but similarly named Dark Souls. Demon's Souls, the cult classic that released in 2009, is finally shutting down the online component to the game. This has been expected for a while now and previous shutdowns were extended but Atlus has announced they no longer can keep the servers going. The shutdown date is May 31st so dust off your copy of the game and get to griefing while you still can. Atlus has also announced a couple more world tendency events before the end. One to run the first half of the month, the other to run the second half. Fans can vote on what type of event they want though as of when I wrote this article I couldn't find where one can vote.
For those wondering about trophies, this shouldn't affect the ability to get trophies as the single player will remain unchanged. It does however make some trophies take slightly longer and it makes planning to get trophies more crucial

Tricky DLC for SSX?
Apr 12 2012 03:38 PM | Smokey-Smokerson in Gaming News
EA Sports has released a somewhat unique way of potentially advertising a future DLC pack for SSX via the EA Sports SSX facebook page, this link shows several puzzle pieces that although not complete when pieced together show images from previous SSX games all released on the PS2, foremost is a picture of the character Elise in her SSX Tricky costume.
Tricky was the 2001 follow up to the original SSX on the PS2 and is still regarded by most as the best game in the series, and as the most recent SSX was released last month to a divided reception with most reveiwers asking for more energy and flair that previous games had this could be a timely boost for the series.

RPG FANS, your wish has been granted!
Apr 11 2012 04:18 PM | Smokey-Smokerson in Sony
After years of waiting it is finally here. The Legend of Dragoon is finally coming to PSN on May 1st. It was originally released in Japan on December 2, 1999, in North America on June 11, 2000, and on January 19, 2001 in Europe. The game received many positive comments and has become a classic for the RPG fans who awaited for a re-release for quite some time.
The game takes place on the fictional continent of Endiness. The story begins when Dart, the protagonist, is heading home from a five-year-long journey to pursue the Black Monster, who killed his parents and destroyed his birth city: Neet.
After being released for the Japanese PS Store on December 22, 2010, the rest of the world now has finally the chance to revisit the world of LoD one more time. What are you waiting for? Start gathering some money, because May is going to be an RPG month!!!

Fallout from Mass Effect 3 still growing
Apr 06 2012 04:55 PM | Smokey-Smokerson in Gaming News
Fans of the Mass Effect series are rallying behind many causes, trying to get Bioware and EA to listen and live up to the promises that were made before the release of Mass Effect 3. As many of you will be aware - unless you're pretty much living under a gaming rock at the moment - the ending from Mass Effect 3 has generated much anger from fans, as Bioware did not live up to their promise of "every choice you make matters".
The reason that this has caused outrage is because all 3 endings bare huge similarity to their outcome, leave massive potholes that you could park a Death Star or two in, and most importantly of all, do not reflect the players choices in the game - something that has been a huge selling point for the series, seeing how your choices in the first game effect the next, and then the next.
This negative reaction has not been helped with EA and Bioware, despite claiming to be listening to the fans of the series, who have announced that they are to release a free* piece of DLC in the summer, currently called an Extended Cut, that aims to fill in the holes left by the endings, despite many saying that there should be a whole new set of endings, each one reflecting the players choices in some way, rather than a generic ABC style that is on offer with the current three endings. The following was taken from a mini FAQ posted on Bioware SocialNetwork:
"What can fans expect from the Extended Cut DLC?
For fans who want more closure in Mass Effect 3, the DLC will offer extended scenes that provide additional context and deeper insight to the conclusion of Commander Shepard's journey.
Are there going to be more/different endings or ending DLCs in the future?
No. BioWare strongly believes in the team's artistic vision for the end of this arc of the Mass Effect franchise. The extended cut DLC will expand on the existing endings, but no further ending DLC is planned.
What is BioWare adding to the ending with the Extended Cut DLC?
BioWare will expanding on the ending to Mass Effect 3 by creating additional cinematics and epilogue scenes to the existing ending sequences. The goal of these new scenes is to provide additional clarity and closure to Mass Effect 3.
When will the Extended Cut DLC be available?
Currently the Extended Cut DLC is planned for this summer, no specific date has been announced at this point.
Why are you releasing the Extended Cut DLC?
Though we remain committed and are proud of the artistic choices we made in the main game, we are aware that there are some fans who would like more closure to Mass Effect 3. The goal of the DLC is not to provide a new ending to the game, rather to offer fans additional context and answers to the end of Commander Shepard's story.
So there you have it. Are we proud of the game we made and the team that made it? Hell yes. Are we going to change the ending of the game? No. Do we appreciate the passion and listen to the feedback delivered to us by our fans? Very much so and we are responding."
*The DLC is free until April 2014
But "does all this negative reaction come from the Ending alone?" I hear some of you ask. While the majority of the answer is "no" the endings have pretty much been the straw that broke the camel’s back, so to speak. Fans were left feeling betrayed when, despite denials from Bioware developers and EA, it became clear that the day 1 DLC - From Ashes - in which you are able to recruit the last living Prothean (an alien race that was wiped out 50,000 years before the events of the first game, and holds much mystery and significance to the lore and story of the series) was actually removed from the disk pre-launch and then fitted with a $10 price tag to recover the missing parts. This came fully to light when PC users found that by editing one specific file, Javik would become available in the main game, though some of his dialog was missing, as well as his unlock mission - all content that was in the DLC.
The next thing that came to light was the difference in quality between different versions of the game. Bioware had previously said that all versions of Mass Effect 3 would be identical, and none would be treated any different from the others. However, the PS3 version of the game suffers with huge drops in frame rate in certain areas of the game. It also is currently in a mess when it comes to the online events that Bioware and EA are putting together every weekend for the community as a whole to work together on. So far, there have been 4 events Operation Goliath - Kill 3,000,000 Reaper Brutes on Silver or Gold, Operation Fortress, a 25% EXP Boost for the weekend, Operation Raptor - Promote 150,000 characters to the SP game (community goal), Promote 2 characters to the SP game (personal Goal), and finally Operation Beachhead, another +25% EXP event for the community starting from today and lasting until Tuesday 10th.
Of these four events, PS3 users have only been able to take part in Operation Fortress, and will be included in Operation Beachhead. In short, Bioware, EA and Sony are all blaming each other and not providing any clear answers to fans about just what exactly the problem is, and why they weren't addressed before the game was even released, when everyone knew that events would be being held on the MP.
The final thing relates to EA and Bioware - namely a lack of customer service, and trying to keep things from spreading by essentially "cracking down" on people who were posting threads outlining their displeasure at how the series ended, as well as the situation with From Ashes and the MP side of things as more information began to spread across the net. Bioware have been actively closing various threads under the claim that they are breaching the Terms and Conditions - which none technically do. EA... well, they're being EA - They are as famous for games as it is for providing bad customer service, and sadly this is no different here, with many Mass Effect 3 fans essentially being given two fingers when they try and ask legitimate questions or get even basic help and support. Needless to say this is helping cement their current, unwanted, latest title of being voted the Worst Company in America 2012 last week.
So, those are the reasons why the fans are feeling angry, and when you’ve seen how they’re being treated, it’s hard not to blame them for being so fed up. Of the groups that are currently making headaches for Bioware and EA, a new one is growing increasingly more active in support. For instance, the Retake Mass Effect group was able to raise over $80,000 before EA and Bioware announced the "Extended Cut" was to be released as DLC
The “(with)Hold The Wallet” group is a selection of fans (myself included) who are committed to not purchasing an EA or Bioware until the ending of Mass Effect 3 is changed to live up to what was promised – an ending that reflects your choices in the previous games to a certain degree – and fans are treated with respect and not just ignored or punished for voicing their displeasure about various issues. The plan is a sound one, as the easiest way to get a big companies attention is to dig into their profits, and the stream of bad press is hurting both companies’ images as time goes on.
It must also be said that many fans are waiting to see just what the "Extended Cut" DLC will do to the endings. With most saying that they'll wait until they see just what EA and Bioware have in-store before they fully commit, many have also said that they aren't going to buy another EA or Bioware product until the DLC is out and they can pass judgement on it themselves.
Fans of the Mass Effect series are asked to join up and support these groups, and try and make EA and Bioware see that we will not be treated as fools. If you support them in this mission, then show your support by joining the group at the link in the sources below.
